Cross Street Piazza

At the intersection of Cross Street and Hanover Street, directly across from the Rose Kennedy Greenway, this project transforms a prominent North End gateway into a vibrant public landscape rooted in culture, food, and community life. Developed in collaboration with restaurateur Frank DePasquale’s vision for a culinary destination, the design reimagines the public realm as an active extension of the neighborhood’s historic street culture.

Patios, terraces, and flexible outdoor dining areas create layered spaces for gathering, seasonal programming, and everyday use. Clear pedestrian connections strengthen links between Salem Street, Hanover Street, and the Greenway, reinforcing the site as a key urban threshold and arrival point.

Native and climate-adapted plantings provide shade, texture, and year-round interest while supporting urban resilience through permeable paving and integrated stormwater strategies. Public art opportunities, interpretive elements, and flexible event zones celebrate the North End’s heritage and evolving identity.

The result is a contemporary urban landscape that balances history and innovation — a welcoming, high-energy civic space that enhances connectivity, supports local culture, and establishes a memorable entrance to one of Boston’s most iconic neighborhoods.
