Hall Street, Waltham

The landscape design for 51 Hall Street supports the adaptive reuse of the former Saint Charles Borromeo Church by blending classic landscape language with a modern residential sensibility. The approach respects the site’s historic character while introducing contemporary amenities that support daily life for future residents.

The project site, zoned Residential C, is located in Waltham’s South Side neighborhood at the corner of Hall Street and Cushing Street, both one-way streets, and sits within one block of the active commercial corridor along Moody Street. The development will convert the existing church, originally constructed in 1922, into approximately twenty (20) residential units. The one-story chapel portion of the building is anticipated to be demolished to accommodate associated parking.

The primary front entry of the church is reimagined as an active residential amenity space. This area draws from traditional, formal landscape precedents—symmetry, defined edges, and durable materials—while incorporating modern detailing and furnishings to create a welcoming and functional gathering space for residents. The design reinforces the building’s civic presence while signaling its new residential use.

Throughout the site, the landscape design emphasizes native and climate-appropriate plantings to support long-term sustainability, seasonal interest, and low maintenance. Character-defining elements and materials will complement the historic architecture of the church while introducing a refined, contemporary palette.

Overall, the landscape design reinforces the project’s adaptive reuse goals—honoring the site’s historic legacy while creating inviting, functional outdoor spaces that enhance the residential experience and strengthen connections to the surrounding South Side neighborhood.
