MAMLEO

Landscape Design Approach: A Civic Space for Community and Connection

The new Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers (MAMLEO) headquarters at 61 Columbia Road is envisioned as more than a building—it is a place for openness, dialogue, and connection between law enforcement and the community. The landscape design plays a critical role in supporting this mission by creating welcoming, accessible, and people-centered outdoor spaces that invite engagement and shared use.

A Welcoming Public Realm
Streetscape improvements along Columbia Road and Seaver Street will strengthen pedestrian safety and comfort while reinforcing the building’s civic presence. Designed in coordination with City review and Boston Complete Streets guidelines, the streetscape will include enhanced sidewalks, tree wells, bicycle accommodations, and thoughtfully coordinated curb cuts.

Thoughtful Site Design
Paving and planting around the building and driveway will create a clear sense of arrival and intuitive circulation, balancing security, visibility, and openness. Landscaped edges and buffers—where space allows—will provide softness, screening, and definition while maintaining transparency.

Sustainable & Functional Features
Green roof design, bicycle parking, and potential service areas such as trash and storage are integrated to support sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term performance.

Together, these landscape elements help transform the MAMLEO headquarters into a true community-centered environment—one that reflects the organization’s commitment to dialogue, trust, and positive change.
