St. Matthews, Boston

St. Matthew’s Church has long been a cornerstone of its neighborhood. This project reimagines the historic campus as a vibrant, inclusive residential community—preserving its architectural legacy while expanding its role as a place of care, connection, and opportunity.

Three historic buildings—the church, rectory, and former school—are thoughtfully adaptively reused and complemented by a new residential building along Norfolk Street. Together, they create much-needed affordable rental housing for families earning up to 60% of Area Median Income (AMI), along with homeownership opportunities for first-time buyers. These homes provide not only stability, but a pathway to long-term equity and intergenerational wealth.

The landscape design plays a central role in reconnecting the campus to the surrounding neighborhood. The extension of Ufford Street creates a new public connection between Stanton and Norfolk Streets, improving walkability and weaving the site back into the city fabric. Streetscapes follow Boston Complete Streets principles, with generous sidewalks, street trees, bike accommodations, and lighting that prioritize safety and daily life.

Welcoming entry terraces, shared courtyards, and landscaped gathering spaces invite residents and neighbors to connect. Native and resilient plantings soften the urban setting, while thoughtful lighting, seating, and play areas support use throughout the day and across generations.

In addition to housing, the campus continues its legacy of service by providing new, purpose-designed spaces for the Wesley Child Care Center and the St. Matthew’s Food Pantry—ensuring these essential community resources remain at the heart of the neighborhood.

The result is a landscape that honors history while looking forward: a place where architecture, open space, and community come together to support families today and for generations to come.
