Summer, Westwood

The home is gracefully set within a semi-wooded landscape, offering a sense of retreat from the surrounding streets. Arrival is choreographed along an existing driveway, a portion of which remains shared with neighboring abutters. As the drive transitions from shared to private, we will explore design opportunities—such as subtle gates, landscape walls, or sculptural planting—to clearly signal arrival and create a memorable entry sequence. This transition will establish a strong visual and experiential connection to the front door and parking areas, reinforcing a sense of place and privacy. Thoughtful screening along the northern edge will further soften views toward the adjacent driveway and enhance the feeling of seclusion, informed by the aesthetic cues shared through your reference imagery.

The South Yard is located closer to the property line and framed by an existing historic stone farmer’s wall, the south yard offers a more intimate and contemplative landscape. The study/office enjoys views and direct access to this area through an inset patio. We will explore enhancing this space as a quiet outdoor extension of the interior, while strengthening connections to the larger outdoor living areas to the north and west through carefully considered pathways and landscape transitions.

The west patio will serve as the heart of outdoor living, both visually and functionally, and will be experienced year-round from the primary interior living spaces. With direct access from the living room and dining nook, this space will be designed as a natural extension of the home. A series of landings and steps will mediate the change in grade, creating a comfortable and elegant transition outdoors. Programmatic elements may include a BBQ area, stone fireplace or oven feature, and generous dining and seating areas, all arranged to support entertaining and everyday living. This patio will also act as a key connector to the pool and recreation areas beyond.

The pool landscape will be thoughtfully sited and shaped to maximize sun exposure, privacy, and visual connection to the home—particularly from the kitchen and primary living spaces. We will explore a range of pool configurations and complementary amenities, including lounging terraces, a spa, and potential shade structures. The extent and character of any required pool enclosure will be carefully integrated into the overall design to ensure safety while maintaining openness and visual continuity with the surrounding landscape.
